Let’s go back to the fall of 2017, shall we?
Our family went under contract on land in Mint Hill, NC, with a dream to build a property one day. Brock was 2 years old, for reference (where does time go?).
For 9 months (yes, long enough to have a baby), we completed the process of rezoning with the Town of Mint Hill. APPROVED!
We finally closed on the property in the summer of 2018 and moved into our first personal live-in fixer upper that was an existing home on the property.
Fun fact: we moved in and the very next week left for 3 weeks of church youth camp. Fun times.
I’d venture to say it is extremely likely that those boxes stayed in our kitchen until late August. 100% probability on that scenario.
By Thanksgiving of 2018, we were ready to begin the kitchen renovation. First up: painting the cabinets and replacing the countertops.
I kept bringing home paint samples and they kept looking like the EXACT same color I already tested. I gave up on bringing anything else home to try.
Did I mention we painted the cabinets WITH ALL OF OUR STUFF INSIDE THEM?? We’re genius renovators. I’d highly recommend our processes.
Also I should mention we started this renovation a week or 2 before Thanksgiving and had already invited all of Brian’s 1 million family members for a family reunion for Thanksgiving. That was so smart of us. Again, I’d highly recommend our ways. Nothing like a deadline to get you going.
The painted cabinets and new countertops turned out beautiful! We hosted Thanksgiving and I cooked 2 turkeys – one in the oven and one in the microwave (that is also an oven) and amazed the 1 million family members that I did indeed have the ability to cook a full turkey in the microwave. Skills.
1 year later…
A lot happened in the beginning of 2019 and we took some time to process how God turned our lives upside down. Looking back, I saw His hand in every moment, every change. I’m so thankful for the way He held us.
Thanksgiving 2019 – time for another family reunion and time to finally finish this kitchen.
We moved our family out of our live-in fixer project into another live-in fixer upper renovation project – because we’re just that crazy.
January 2020, Carriker Cottage was ready to be listed on Airbnb. It was our little experiment with the first cottage on the property to see if real people will actually want to come stay in Mint Hill, NC at the Old Haigler Inn one day.
To our surprise, people did want to come.
That first Airbnb took off and someone booked the very first weekend – before I had even bought linens to sleep on!
This cottage will always hold a special place in my heart. <3
