#makeovermonday / kids room closet in the cottage

the daily Starr makeover monday blog

We’re making it room by room as we settle into our little cottage at the new property. In case you missed it, last week we tackled the kitchen for our #makeovermonday project. You can see all those details here.

This week it was time to organize the closet in our girl’s room – something that has been way overdue, with piles and piles laying around serving as their wardrobe.

No bueno.

Here is the before, including my crazy hair.

These closet organizers were left in our home, but not put together. I really didn’t know what to do with them.

After spending 2 hours trying to figure them out on my own and getting more than frustrated, I decided to google. Ahhhh, this is what it makes!

Nice!

That imaged helped tremendously. Time to get started. Here is their closet before.

It took no time to get the system put together. I figured out that we actually had two systems. Since their closet is wide and both girls are sharing the closet, I put them side by side.

Yay! Today the girls helped me get their clothes organized and we went to work.

First, they sorted hangers.

Example of child #1 – most like Brian.

SHE COLOR CODED THE HANGERS. Oh. My. Word.

This is child #2 – most like me.

There is a pile. No coordination whatsoever. It is beautiful.

We laid their clothes out on the beds to see what we would have room for.

And tada!!!

They are more excited than peanut butter. And I’m THRILLED.

Everyone is saying, “Oh, wow, we can see the dresser!!”

Yes, yes we can.

We still have some work to do on this cabinet and I need to figure out a solution for these items in the clear organizers we used in the last house.

Tonight they will sleep well, indeed.

  1. We definitely need some kind of closet system in both kids’ closets for different reasons. Ethan’s is a huge expanse with just an upper shelf and hanger rod. There is tons of voided space that could use some lower/shorter shelves or something to make better use of space. On the other hand, Emery’s closet is tiny – more like a coat closet, with just one upper shelf and hanger rod. Ethan can reach his rod to hang up his clothes, but Emery can’t. A system like this an a loser rod or two would help in organizing the clothes but also in giving her more independence in putting up her own hang-up clothes. Geez. Seems like there is always something to do.
