#makeovermonday / welcome to our new cottage AND the one renovation we’ve completed so far

the daily Starr makeover monday blog

2 weeks ago we started moving to our new little cottage on the property in Mint Hill!

Background story – we’re living in this home temporarily over the next year while our home is being built beside mom and dad. After we move out, this home will be fully renovated and become our first official cottage at the Old Haigler Inn for guests reservations!

Earlier this afternoon I gave a quick walk-thru tour on Facebook live of the inside. NOTE: I have no idea why the camera turned while I was giving the tour – I held my phone sideways the entire time, lol! So, just turn your screen as you watch, mmmmk>>?!?!?!

As I said in the video, Brian and I both agreed that it didn’t make sense to do renovations in this house before we moved our family in. {AHHHHH WHY DID I AGREE TO THAT?!?!?!?} We’ll scuff up the walls and such, so it would be best to renovate AFTER we move out next year. Blah, blah, blah…

However, there was 1 project that I convinced Brian to take on last week right after we moved in.

You guessed it! The fireplace.

The previous owners used this room as a formal dining room and we needed the space more as a living room. You can even see over the fireplace that the sheetrock has been patched and there used to be a TV niche above the mantle. YES!

We were scheduled to have the internet/cable provider to our house for installs on the day after we moved in and needed to quickly figure out where our TV would be located. The best location was going to be over that fireplace.

2 things –

#1 – we figured there would be power and cable behind the patched sheetrock (THERE WAS!!!! PRAISES!!!).

#2 – a friend recently inspired me with her own fireplace renovation.

Brian agreed to go ahead and do the shiplap before we mounted the TV and I wanted to SHOUT WITH JOY ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!! We may not have a renovated house and a pretty kitchen, but we WILL HAVE A SHIPLAP FIREPLACE, y’alllllllllll!!!

before

after

This is definitely more of an in-progress photo instead of the after. We’ve still got boxes everywhere and we’re planning to take those blinds down to let in natural light. The dining room light will be replaced with a ceiling fan and I might even grab my paintbrush and lighten up these dark tan walls….

But, y’all get the idea!!

I mean, I haven’t even cleaned the fireplace yet from removing the mantle, ahah!

There is certainly more to come in our own little fixer upper cottage. Like my sister said, “Well, you’ve sure got a LOT of #makeovermonday projects to do here!”

Oh, and happy birthday, MOM! We love you more than you’ll ever know!
