#1wordwednesday / my husband still does this when driving down the road {HABITS}

the daily Starr blog Starr haigler 8

When I moved to Union County as a teenager, there was something people did on country roads that caught my attention, especially when I started driving.

Did you catch it?

Yes. Wave at EVERYBODY. Just throw your hand or your index finger up over the top of the steering wheel when you pass someone.

It’s a simple, friendly,Β “Howdy, neighbor!”Β Whether you know them or not, lol!

I’ve started paying attention lately more to this {habit}, especially from my husband. He grew up in the country where everyone knew just about everybody else and to this day most drivers still wave as you pass by on the road.

It takes me back to a time when people cared about other people. When people cared enough to give a simple wave.

I want my kids to grow up doing that. Yes, this is a {habit} we can teach them in how to be nice humans.

Haigler Hospitality {habit}:

On this #1wordwednesday – how about we all bring back a little true southern hospitality to our roads and neighbors. What if we all made it a {habit} to wave as we pass by others?

I began testing this habit in our neighborhood over the past couple of weeks. I’ll throw my hand up at neighbors as I leave in the mornings.Β  Give a smile and a wave to those on the sidewalks with their dogs going for a morning stroll.

It takes 2 seconds.

It could brighten someone’s day.

Won’t you join us?

  1. We use to do that all the time back in NY where we were from. Down here no one notices you. So we stopped.
    Maybe time to start again? Thanks for the reminder and tell Brian I will wave at him.

  2. I don’t do it as much anymore, but I did it when I was growing up. Where I come from, the index finger or two fingers up is just to be polite – the whole hand thrown up means you actually know the person in the other car πŸ˜‰
