#1wordwednesday / who are you trying to {IMPRESS}?

the daily Starr blog Starr haigler 8

This post from Lysa TerKeurst stopped me in my tracks earlier this week.

“All this work I’m doing, who is it really for? It’s easy to say it’s for God. Or for my family’s provision. Or for the people I serve. But could some part of that “drive” be to impress others? To be more noticed? To push past the crowd and stand in the spotlight of success? To feel like you matter? To prove someone wrong who said you couldn’t?”

Ouch.

Who are you trying to {IMPRESS}?

The words don’t feel as pretty as those flowers up there, do they?

No, if I’m being honest with myself, they feel cold, lonely and hard. Life is hard y’all. Relationships are hard. Earning a living is hard. Marriage is hard. Parenting is hard. Dreaming is hard.

Jesus says to quit trying to do everything and impress everyone. Stop the striving. Sit down and rest. And come to Me.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

For me, that looks like putting the phone down more often and focusing on what is in front of my face instead of comparing my life to the people on the inside of that tiny screen.

Oh, how it steals my joy some days.

Depression and comparison, they are a slippery slope. It’s easy to slip off into the darkness and be bound by those chains that our culture so tightly binds.

I know.

I struggle with this too. I struggle with keeping up and being liked and keeping people happy.

Tonight, I want to impress my Jesus. I want to sit in His arms and tell Him how tired I am from this rat race. I want to stop the madness and just breathe a sigh of relief that He knows and He cares and He has it all under control.

Tonight, I want Him. More than anything, oh how I desperately need Him.
