#shareitsaturday / my secret for cheap airfare tickets

the daily Starr share it saturday

We travel several times a year where we need specific airline tickets – for work and for vacations.

My secret for getting the absolute best deal on the airfare portion of our travel?

Kayak.com

Specifically, I set up a price alert on Kayak and wait for the rates to drop.

It’s simple – pick your dates for travel and the airports you’re needing. Set up the price alert and Kayak will email you each morning letting you know if the price has dropped or gone up. They’ll also give you a recommendation on whether or not to purchase yet or wait based on their research and trends for pricing.

For example, I’ve been watching prices on flights to the west coast for a business trip we’re taking this year. The prices have been pretty high (almost $400 round trip – with 1 stop each way) because we’re needing to travel on a holiday weekend.

I’ve had my price alert set and this morning- GUESS WHAT?? The price for a round trip ticket – NONSTOP – from Charlotte to LA on the dates I need dropped to $255!!

There ya go!

Brian and I set an alert with Kayak each year for our anniversary trip and wait for the prices to drop. Each year for the past 5 years there has been a significant dip in prices during the spring/summer months and we’re able to get a great deal on our travel. Yay for Kayak!!

    • I would say purchase insurance if you think you’ll have something come up. We don’t typically and haven’t had to miss any of our trips 🙂 If travel is interrupted because of weather or natural disaster, airlines will usually give you a credit. This happened to me and Brian last fall. We were supposed to travel to Texas for work when the hurricanes hit. The airline gave us a credit to use during our next trip within one year.
