I haven’t been getting enough sleep.
And ohhhhh…how I love to sleep.
For a while, I really focused on getting in the bed earlier and making sleep a priority.
For a while didn’t last very long.
Some days I don’t manage my time well and sleep doesn’t come because I’ve procrastinated (I should say this is MOST days).
Some days I manage my time extremely well and sleep doesn’t come because I have too much on my plate.
Either way – sleep should be a priority. Amen.
Easier said than done.
How much sleep should one get??
Per the CDC:
Adults need 7 or more hours of sleep per night for the best health and wellbeing.1 Short sleep duration is defined as less than 7 hours of sleep per 24-hour period.
Wow. 7 hours…IS THAT RIGHT??
If I’m being honest, I need more like 8 hours to feel my best.
On average, I’d say I typically survive on 5-6 hours.
Adults who were short sleepers (less than 7 hours of sleep per 24-hour period) were more likely to report being obese, physically inactive, and current smokers compared to people who got enough sleep (7 or more hours per 24-hour period) (see Table 2). – From the CDC Website.
Annnnd it gets better.
Adults who were short sleepers (less than 7 hours per 24-hour period) were more likely to report 10 chronic health conditions compared to those who got enough sleep (7 or more hours per 24-hour period) (see Table 3). – From the CDC Website.
You can’t ignore the facts.
Add to that – I’m clearly not the best version of me when I choose to operate in chronic sleep deprivation.
I’m more likely to lose my temper and yell at my kids, blame others for my problems, oversleep and cause my family to have disastrous mornings – day after day after day after day.
I’m speaking from experience – and not in a proud way.
The past couple of weeks have driven me to little sleep and today was a breaking point. Sometimes I’m thankful for the days that almost break us because they help us to recognize something NEEDS to change.
How about you?
How have you been sleeping? If you’re like me and nearing a breaking point – stop today to #clearthestage and evaluate what you can change. That’s exactly what I’m doing tonight.
And I’ll be getting myself to bed.
Alllll the things can wait.
I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, you know? Ernest Hemingway
