#clearthestage / I am not in control – even though I REALLY want to be in control of ALL THE THINGS

This dream is so crazy, I seriously laughed at Brian the first time he made mention of the idea. We’ve been searching for land the past 2 years to build a property that goes way beyond our family and into something bigger.

When this dream finally happens, y’all are gonna laugh too!! You just wait!!

Door after door after door after door slammed shut right before our eyes.

I won’t lie – there were days when I wanted to give up and thought, “Lord, did you really give us this dream, ’cause it sure doesn’t seem to be working out too well.”

Here’s the thing – we couldn’t get away from the dream.

With every “no” that came our way, we still had hope.

And we keep looking and searching and stepping out in blind faith. Even though most days I honestly feel like a complete idiot who is an imposter of someone who actually knows what they are doing. Like really, WHAT ARE WE DOING??? WHO DOES THIS??? WHO ARE WE??? ARE WE PEOPLE WHO DO THESE BIG THINGS???

Then I thought about all of my favorite places I love on this earth – our favorite hotel in the mountains, our favorite little coffee shop cafe, our favorite retreat to get away from the busyness of life. All of those places started with a dream.

Someone had to have the vision and the dream.

Then, someone had to do all the hard things and overcome all the obstacles and doors slamming shut in their face. Someone had to act on those dreams. I’m so thankful they persisted!! Let’s be those people!!! Let’s bring our dream to life!

Throughout these past few years of chasing our dream, I’ve noticed one major lesson God keeps teaching me over and over again.

I, Starr Haigler, aka CONTROL FREAK QUEEN, am not in control.
I, Starr Haigler, aka CONTROL FREAK QUEEN, am not in control.
I, Starr Haigler, aka CONTROL FREAK QUEEN, am not in control.
I, Starr Haigler, aka CONTROL FREAK QUEEN, am not in control.

No matter how bad I want to be in control, I am not.

And that is so hard for me to understand most days.

I cannot control who wants to sell their land.

I cannot control town rezoning ordinances.

I cannot control if we will be allowed access to water and sewer.

These things are completely out of my control.

I can’t even control the fact that we’re pursuing an area outside of our comfort zone – an area we don’t have many contacts or business relationships.

And that is okay. Really, I’m fine.

(You have no idea how hard that is for me to say.)

So, here we are. Doing all the crazy things and realizing we aren’t in control. At all.

Isn’t that how God usually works?

Sometimes He has to #clearthestage when it comes to my control habits.

Now for an update.

This week is a big one. We have our first presentation before the Town of Mint Hill Board of Commissioners!!!!

Y’all. We. Are. Going. To. Be. Presenting. In. A. Town. Meeting.

The most hilarious part of all this: Brian and I were flat broke when we first got married and didn’t have cable TV. We had a bunny ear antenna and if we put tin foil covering the right places, we could pick up the local public access channel. Our main source of entertainment was watching the local Commissioners meetings. I am not even joking!!!

We’re so prepared for this.

If you live in or around Mint Hill, NC (or if you’re local and you love us and don’t even live in Mint Hill), we invite you to come and show your support for our first presentation to the board. You don’t need to speak or say a word – actually, you can’t speak…hahah…it’s not even allowed in this meeting. Just show up and be behind us.

Thursday, Oct. 12 – 6:00pm (we present at 6:20 and finish at 6:40)

Location: Mint Hill Town Hall
4430 Mint Hill Village Lane
Mint Hill, NC 28227

If you’re not local – we’d so appreciate your prayers! There are many details we’re working hard to confirm before Thursday’s meeting.

But, I’m not worried one bit.

God’s got this.
