#thirstythursday / why couldn’t I fix it, Lord?

the daily Starr thirsty thursday

There has been a scripture spinning in my brain all week.

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29 KJV

Let’s dive into what was happening before Jesus spoke these words to his disciples.

A crowd has gathered around some of the disciples and other religious leaders and they began arguing. Jesus comes on the scene and wants to know exactly what the problem is.

Mark 9:17 (NLT) One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won’t let him talk. 18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.[d] So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn’t do it.”

19 Jesus said to them,[e] “You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

This father has come, desperately needing a healing for his son who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jesus wasn’t there yet when they arrived, so the disciples step up and try to perform the healing themselves. They failed miserably. Time for Jesus to do what he does best.

20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.

21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father.

He replied, “Since he was a little boy. 22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”

23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.”

Can’t you just see Jesus and the look on his face – ummmm….IF I CAN??? Do you KNOW who you’re talking to, sir????

24 The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

I love this response. How many times have I felt exactly the same way? Oh, I believe God can do anything. I just need help overcoming my silly emotional unbeliefs that get in the way! Anybody else?? It’s an everyday battle of the mind.

25 When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil[f] spirit. “Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said. “I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”

26 Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, “He’s dead.”27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.

Boom. Mic drop. Jesus has done it again.

28 Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?”

29 Jesus replied, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.[g]”

Does this hit anyone else as hard as it hit me when I read this text earlier in the week? Why couldn’t we do it, Lord? What went wrong?

I start thinking about my own situations.

Why couldn’t I handle this, God?

Shouldn’t I have been able to say the right thing?

What did I do wrong to drop the ball and mess up, again??

And I so gently hear his response (I like the KJV better of this verse because it keeps a key element).

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29 KJV

Certain things in this life will only come by prayer and fasting.

ONLY by prayer and fasting.

Have I been faithful enough in those areas to handle the tough situations? Or is this the reason for many times when I try to handle it all on my own and fail miserably?

What if I gave more to prayer and fasting? How would that change my life?

Significantly. Indeed.

How about you? What situation have you been trying to handle on your own lately? Is there something God is calling you to pray and fast about? This could be the missing ingredient that gives victory in Jesus Christ.
