#1wordwednesday / haigler hospitality {HABITS} – teaching our kids to be nice humans

the daily Starr blog Starr haigler 8

Over the past few months, I’ve been paying attention to small habits that make people on this earth nice.

For example – things like opening doors for others, picking up trash when you see it on the ground, putting your buggy back in the designated place of parking lots, etc.

You know those things I’m talking about.

Sure, they may seem like common sense to some. But, some people obviously think these jobs are for somebody else to do.

We are that SOMEBODY! Hello!

I want to teach our kids to be the kind of nice humans who naturally do those things. I want them to be the people that take a few extra moments to genuinely be nice.

If Brian and I don’t teach them these habits, who will?

That’s why I’m introducing a new series for #1wordwednesday called Haigler Hospitality {HABITS}.

Once a week we’ll introduce a simple habit for our kids to learn and challenge them to practice the habit as much as possible.

Each time they get caught practicing the weekly habit on their own we’ll keep track and ultimately celebrate our family’s progress.

Haigler Hospitality Habit #1 –

Let someone else go first.

In a world where it’s all about ME ME ME, let’s be people that graciously allow others to go ahead of us.

Examples –

In traffic, let that car go ahead of you when merging lanes (ummm, preaching to MYSELF on this one). Y’all can’t even understand how my blood boils when people jet themselves up in front of everyone else and they know a lane is ending. Just. Stop. It. Right. Now.

At school, let your friend go first on the playground at your favorite activity.

At home, let your sister go up the stairs first instead of plowing around her and knocking her down because you’re faster at stair climbing and obviously in a complete hurry for no reason at all (this happened today at our house, again).

When two people arrive at a door at the same time, step back and let the other person go through first. This is a huge one. There are so many people that don’t do this!!! Be that nice person. Always.

Alright, let’s see how many times we can let someone else go first this week! GO!!!

Practice {Habit} #1 as much as possible this week.
