#trashouttuesday / how many pairs of shoes do you have, Starr?

the daily Starr trash out tuesday

The question came from a blog reader who reached out to me for advice on purging her closet.

First, she started with great questions like, “Is it better to sell or donate or what?? How do I even begin this process?? I have toooooo much stuff!”

Me too, girlfriend. Me too.

In the past several weeks I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s easier and faster to just donate it all and give it away. Find an organization that needs your stuff. Put it directly in the hands of those with a need. It won’t take long to find someone, I promise.

Then, she dropped a bomb.

“So, Starr – how many pairs of shoes do you have?”

Gulp.

I didn’t know. And to be honest, I didn’t want to find out.

And that’s exactly what I told her. I don’t know and I really don’t want to find out. I know it’s too many for any one person to have.

Since then, her question has haunted me. It’s like that song by Imagine Dragons, Demons.

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

Excess. In my closet. It’s where my demons hide. I want to hide the truth.

So, how many pairs of shoes do you have, Starr?

I can’t be sure – but as of a few weeks ago, that number was over 100 pairs.

Please don’t judge. Y’all. Please just don’t.

You have your demons and I have mine.

I started purging a few weeks ago. I immediately found 15/20 pair I NEVER wear and sent them to our church yard sale. That was easy and I haven’t even missed them.

Now, it’s time to do more.

Tonight I took them ALL out of the closet shelves.

83 pairs of shoes. That’s the current number.

I got rid of 20 more.

I’m down to 63.

Lessons learned from purging my massive-way-too-many shoe collection.

#1 – Some of these shoes are special occasion shoes that I don’t wear often and I’m TOTALLY ok keeping them. I like having shoes to dress up in and it’s fine if they hurt my feet!!

#2 – I didn’t purge many boots because I haven’t been wearing them lately and I’m not sure which ones are my favorite. Some of them I got cheap on clearance at Target this spring so I haven’t even worn them yet. Later this winter I’ll have a better idea of which ones should go and which ones should stay.

#3 – I don’t wear shoes because I forget I have them. I’m not exactly sure why I’ve stored my shoes facing inward for 10 years. Tonight I put them back in the shelves more like a store display, facing forward. I can see every pair I own and none of them are shoved into the back of the closet. Every pair is visible – and the dust bunnies too. Geez, I should have dusted before putting those back.

#4 – 63 is too many, I know. I’m getting there. Give me some time. This is a process.

And oh my goodness – Brian, please don’t kill me. I had a rewards coupon earlier this week and ordered a pair of shoes that are going to arrive in the next few days. Not such great timing on that one, right/??

Meanwhile, here is Brian’s shoe cabinet.

Insert me rolling my eyes here.

How many pairs of shoes do you have?

I bet it’s more than you think. Pull them all out and give it a count.

Put them back one at a time and figure out a way to make them more like a display. Get rid of those you don’t absolutely love. Someone else will. 🙂

  1. To be honest, I have about that many but when you wear my size, it’s not always easy finding shoes that fit so when I do, I am excited and most of the time buy them. However, I only pay high prices for tennis shoes because you get what you pay for. I also pass them on if it’s shoes I don’t wear or I find someone who needs them or wears my size. I would say a lot of it comes from only a couple pairs of shoes growing up. We have church shoes and school shoes. It could always be worse 😀 shoes are awesome!!

  2. Ha! You’ll love this… if I do what I am thinking about (if I can figure out the finances for it), I think I can get down to less than 10 pair of shoes by next year…. The plan? Ordering a custom fit to me pair of boots. Gorgeous leather… and a little pricey. So yeah they will be all I wear if I get them. 🙂

    I like that Brian’s are double stacked…

Good job on the purge so far!!

  3. Please don’t hate me I have 3. We are limited in space and since I have had foot surgery I can only wear zero drop shoes. They are expensive so I only have 2 for church and one pair of tennies. They all fit in the small space allotted.
