Kids sure do seem to have a way of lighting up a room with their spontaneous joy and contagious laughter. Especially our own kiddos – I can look at them and start giggling in the midst of the toughest days.
Just look at these crazies!! I dare you not to smile.
Kids know how to live care free.
Adults – well, we get stuck in our petty frustrations and get offended and hold grudges. We dwell on he-said, she-said drama and let it ruin our day or even our entire life. Too often we let the thoughts and opinions of others determine our happiness and peace. Then we make it almost impossible to live a life filled with laughter and joy. Bah-humbug! Right??
I love this devotional from God’s Words of Life for Women talking about joy.
They don’t put it on hold or put a lid on it. They spend it with abandon. They practice it at every small occasion.
Yes, I think we can learn a thing or two from our kids when it comes to the topic of joy. What if we practiced joy at every small occasion we came across? How would our lives be different?
Instead of complaining - give praise. Instead of grumbling - be grateful. Instead of blaming - be the helper. Instead of always taking - be the cheerful giver.
Jesus had something to say about joy, too.
“Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.”
My gut reaction to someone insulting me certainly wouldn’t be to leap for joy!! But Jesus can change even the coldest heart to live differently. Even mine on days when everyone is getting on my last nerve (you don’t have those days, right??).
God, help me remember on this #thirstythursday to live more like a child – to find joy in the small occasions and live in Your strength day by day.
