#1wordwednesday / praying outside the {BOX}

the daily Starr blog Starr haigler 8

Sometimes I get so caught up in my needs and situations that I find myself praying very specifically to God – almost as if I know EXACTLY what should be done to fix everything.

Then I wake up and remember, “OH YEAH, I’m not God! I’m Starr. He’s GOD!”

Without any sort of intention, I put God and the plans for my life inside a pretty little {box} with a big red bow.

That’s exactly what’s happened lately. I have such a vision for my dreams and the future I can almost see it in the fields around our house as I drive each day.

I realized a few weeks ago that maybe my vision isn’t exactly what God has in mind and maybe my prayers have been a bit boxed in.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV

So I started praying a little differently.

Lord, don’t let my vision and plans get in the way of what You have ahead on this journey. Above all else, I want what YOU want. Get me out of the box I’ve created. Guide my steps and words and thoughts. Let them all go through Your filter. I think I know what’s best, but we both know that isn’t so. Your ways are higher and greater and more than anything I could ever dream. Get me out of this box and into an exciting and unpredictable adventure!

How about you? Have you been praying inside a box too? Let’s throw those boxes out to the curb and let the recycle company take them away!

  1. I guess if you are instructing God that the only way things will work out is your way, yes that is putting God in a box. However, don’t you like to hear the dreams and ideas of your beautiful daughters?
    Philippians 4:6King James Version (KJV)

    6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

    I don’t think that letting God know your heart (which he already knows) is a bad thing. Only if you are letting him know that you know exactly how your life should be.

    • Yes, this is true. It is indeed a fine line. I think for me my focus has just been very narrow on what I felt would work for our dream for having a property. Part of me wanted to not even consider anything outside of that focus and even geographical area around our current home. For months I’ve been struggling with letting go of my predefined areas and letting God take us wherever He wants us to go! Does that make sense? I’m to the point where I’m finally surrendering my perfect laid out plans to whatever and wherever He says to go. That’s a big step for me. Going outside the area I thought we would be is very uncomfortable for me. There’s so much unknown.
