We have a guest room in our house. It’s more like a “junk room” because it EASILY catches all our junk.
Anybody else know the feeling??
Joy and Chloe live here most weekends and during the summer, but they are family, so they just have to overlook the junk!
Our guest room only gets cleaned out when “guests” are coming. It’s been a while since we’ve had overnight guests and this room is way overdue for a massive clean out.
My #1 secret for conquering any junk room?
TAKE EVERYTHING OUT.
The only items left were the lamps, pillows, blankets and robes Joy and Chloe use when they stay over.
Everything else had to go.
Don’t be fooled – this is hard work.
I didn’t get started until around 4:30 this afternoon. Then I worked on and off around daycare pickup, dinner and tending to kiddos. We just finished around 9pm.
All of the items are scattered in our hallway and bonus room currently – and I’ve given myself a strict 2 week timeframe to either find a place for the items we’re keeping or get rid of them. Hint – don’t put your junk items where they’ll easily be overlooked. Put them out in main traffic areas and you’ll get tired of seeing it each day and do something about it quicker!
Full disclosure, the closet is still jam packed. I don’t have room to pull everything out in my hallway yet. Once I’m able to shift around the items we pulled out tonight, I’ll empty the closet too. Starting fresh is the best way to clean out any room. It’s like a refreshing clean slate.
Our guest room has been through so many different variations over the past 11 years!
We sold all of that furniture above last summer and now I have exciting new plans for this room. I’m going to tackle a design that will showcase the style we want at our future property – the Old Haigler Inn.
Something sort of like this:
The Old Edwards Inn – Highlands, NC
I believe creating a space in our home that mirrors our future dream will keep the passion in my heart to trust God and move forward with what He has ahead for our family.
Yay for cleaning out and making room for new dreams!!

A junk “house”. Getting rid of a lot. Moving is the best reason to clean out.
