Today’s #funfriday surprise is something I’ve had on my list of to-dos for a long time. I can remember setting up my first bank account in high school and I wanted to be sure we set this example early on for our kiddos.
Our girls opened their first savings account at our State Employees’ Credit Union!
Bonus of living in a small town and banking at the credit union? You have family that works there!! That’s Brian’s cousin, Angie, one of our favorite bank tellers!
Our girls arrived and checked in at the desk.
At this moment we told them what was happening. Kayla was giddy, ha! Maybe she’s just excited that we won’t keep her money in a sandwich bag with I OWE YOUs every time we order pizza and don’t have cash!!! I wish I were joking about this!!
Then, we had to wait our turn to set up the account with one of the bankers. They even had toys to play with during our wait.
Mr. Adam called us back to his office.
I think the girls were nervous that they were going to have to sign their lives away!!
Not hardly.
But Kylie was more interested in her rainbow drawing than the account setup details.
Finally we finished up and it was time to take photos!
The folks at our Indian Trail SECU took such great care of us getting our Fat Cat Accounts set up.
Parents – we had no idea of the benefits available with these free accounts! There’s so much for kids to learn how to be responsible with money, as well as included life insurance at no charge until they are 20 years old. WOW!
You can learn more about the Fat Cat program with NC State Employees’ Credit Union here: https://www.ncsecu.org/LifeStages/FatCat.html
And the website for kids has lots of resources for learning about money: https://www.cufatcats.org/
What a fun afternoon we had for sure. Happy weekending, y’all!

For full disclosure and so no one gets in trouble Angie is one of our favorite tellers but she can’t actually assist us since we are related. It is against the credit union’s policy. 🙂
