Last night we started a fun baking project after our 1st Annual Haigler Green Dinner:
I found the Easy Layers 5 layer cake pan set by Wilton at Michael’s and used a 40% off coupon, so it was less than $10!
We used normal white cake mix (I found the Pillsbury Purely Simple at our Harris Teeter) and added in Jello gelatin flavors and food coloring to make our batter the desired colors for our rainbow cake. Note: do not use the entire Jello boxes – just a tad to give it color and flavor. The food color made our colors brighter, so you’ll need to add those to get bright cake like ours.
There were a total of 2 cake mix batters that we divided and mixed into 6 colors. First, I filled the 5 small cake pans – they didn’t take much at all. Full disclosure – mom came over to help me with all these colors and batters, cause this is not my specialty!!
Then we used the remaining batter and filled two round pans.
I read that it’s important not to mix your colors together after pouring into the pan or it will not come out pretty – the colors will mix up and you’ll have a brown cake. Just pour each color of batter separately into the pan. The only thing I did at the end was spread the batter to fill the edges of the pans.
They all turned out perfectly!!
The purple was the only one I could have made a bit brighter. And that brown you see is where the cake was getting dark against the pan, not the cake color.
I told the girls we were going to wait until morning to decorate, but I decided to let them stay up and do our little 5 layer cake anyways since it was fun Friday after all!
I iced the cake and they used the marshmallows from an entire box of Lucky Charms that they separated out while mom and I were doing the cake mix batters.
It turned out super cute!! I’m thinking we might have to make one of these every year for St. Patrick’s Day.
And I can’t even believe how cute it turned out inside.
I mean – how adorable is that???
We waited until this morning to tackle the other two rainbow cakes that we decided to decorate and deliver to friends. The kiddos all lined up to watch while I iced the cakes. Brock really did enjoy himself.
Next, we put out the sprinkles. I found these cute packets for only 99 cents each at Michael’s.
The girls were in charge of sprinkles.
3 rainbow cakes complete, 2 delivered to friends and 2 pieces to Grammy and Papa!
We’ll certainly be doing these cakes again. We had so much fun on this #shareitsaturday.
