in loving memory of baby Azaliya – inspired by a mom with unimaginable faith

I don’t have a makeover for you today, but instead I bring you words from a mom who held her baby as she met Jesus this morning.

The story of baby Azaliya has captured my heart this week. Last Tuesday morning, 100 young moms gathered for a local Bible study like we’ve done for the past couple of months.

What we didn’t realize was that one of us would unexpectedly lose a child this week. To say we’ve all been shocked and heartbroken is an understatement.Β I mean, ANY of our kids could have been the one with pneumonia rushed to the hospital by ambulance on Wednesday morning.

There’s so much we don’t understand. We’ve struggled to find the words. And oh, how we’ve come together like a mighty army praying for one of our own.

We received text updates from our table leaders all week long letting us know how to pray. Those text messages brought weeping tears this morning when we got the message that she passed.

What I didn’t expect was to see a message that read like this:

To be grateful for the 10 months they had, to have time to accept the news slowly, to hold her as she took her last breaths…

Would I have been so full of gratitude had this been me?

I’m not so sure.

This can only be explained by the hope that is found in Jesus Christ.

Only Jesus.

My mind drifted back to several years ago when my grandmother got the news that her cancer had spread and there was nothing they could do. She sat in that hospital bed and talked about how she had lived SUCH a great long life – and that she wasn’t afraid or worried. She was ready to go home.

One of the doctors came in to talk to Glennie the Great while dad and I sat with her one afternoon. While the doctor began talking about the situation, Grandma just smiled and laughed and acted like it was the most glorious day.

The doctor finally stopped to ask if grandma knew exactly what was going on. Grandma assured her that she knew everything and that all was well.

At that point the doctor said, “You must be a CHRISTIAN!”

To which my grandma smiled as big as she could and said, “Oh honey, YES!!!! And I can’t wait to meet Him!!!”

I still get chills.

Can you imagine meeting Jesus?

Azaliya got to do that today.

I’d like to think maybe Glennie the Great was sitting in a rocking chair watching over us this morning and was part of the welcoming committee for this sweet baby. Oh, how she loved babies.

Gosh, now I’m sitting here like a blubbery mess.

Only Jesus. Only Jesus.

If you could have seen me, before the Savior found me, then I know that you would understand….

Oh the change that’s happened, since I met the Master, He touched me with that tender nail-scarred hand….

And in that moment, brand-new life began!

Only He can take a broken heart, and make it new again,

Only He can fill a life with joy and break the chains of sin,

Only He can shed the precious blood that frees us,

Only Jesus, Only Jesus!

Only Jesus can restore the joy to shattered, broken dreams, and bring a wayward wandering heart to the temple of the King, the King!

Only He can take a broken heart, and make it new again,

Only He can fill a life with joy and break the chains of sin,

Only He can shed the precious blood that frees us,

Only Jesus, Only Jesus!

    • Thank you so much for the prayers, friend. I’ve never seen such strength. The Lord is close and has been so evident, even in all of these. Continued prayers for sure. Love you!
