#slowitdownSunday / how to survive on 3 hours of sleep

the daily Starr slow it down Sunday

Why do I always do this to myself? It’s the night before a trip and I begin packing at approximately 12am. No big deal.

Said no one EVER!

I absolutely despise this bad habit of mine. I wish I could be one of those planner types that has everything sorted and organized and, ya know – like always be one step ahead.  Ha!

Instead, I’m usually living on a wing and prayer. Literally.

Currently we’re somewhere over the Great Lakes region and that lake looks more like an ocean. We southerners don’t think about lakes being this big!

Oh and look – SNOW!!!

Side note: This is the clearest day of flying I’ve experienced in ages. I’ve been able to see the ground almost the entire time since leaving Charlotte. Amazing!!!

Anyways. So back to last night. I finally laid down my weary self at 5am – still with no bags packed for Brock, who will be staying with friends all week while we travel for our annual Keller Williams company-wide convention.

Brock proceeded to wake up crying 45 minutes later. This is the life, y’all. And I’m sure one day we will miss this. But, today is definitely not that day.

At 8:30am I felt like death warmed over and managed to get myself up out of bed to get our family ready for church and for me to teach Sunday School – that was FUN!! I’m not sure if anything I said this morning made any sense whatsoever, honestly.

We did our thing at church with a beautiful time of worship and my favorite part of the entire morning was that simple song we sang, “Oh, how I love Jesus.”

Oh, how I love Jesus

Oh, how I love Jesus

Oh, how I love Jesus

Because He first loved me

Because when you’ve had 3 hours of sleep and you don’t know how it’s humanly possible to get it all done, knowing that Jesus loves you can calm the frantic soul.

He loved us first.

He still loves us, regardless.

Regardless of our mistakes. Regardless of our bad habits. Regardless of how many times we fall short and don’t measure up.

I’ve been there – way more than I’d like to admit.

Most people know this about our family: we live a busy and full life. We live a fun life, most days! We serve and love big.

Sometimes that life seems incredibly fun and attractive to those looking at us from the outside windows.

Sometimes, it means getting 3 hours of sleep and still surviving the next day with a smile.

Real life.

I don’t regret any of the moments that made up our real life adventure over the past week.

Sometimes I wonder if getting 3 hours of sleep is enough to make you remember to truly crave the love of Jesus. And coffee.  Lots of coffee. With milk.

Psalm 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Romans 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:2-5 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

“The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.” – C.S. Lewis
