#slowitdownSunday / when your tree crashes down and your kids are sick

the daily Starr slow it down Sunday

I had a lot of things planned for today:

Go to church, rehearse the Christmas program with our Children’s Church kids for the last time before we perform, prepare for a youth dinner at our house tonight…

Instead,

I stayed home with sick kids. Yuck! The stomach bug germs have taken over in our house and it wasn’t a good idea to have them anywhere near other people at church.

So, I missed the rehearsal for the Christmas program.

And no one came for dinner at our house.

I stayed at home to be supermom with sick kiddos while Brian went to church and then we switched off in the afternoon. While I escaped for a few moments to the grocery store, you can only imagine my face when I got this text message from Brian (his typing in grey):

Yes.

You read it right.

Our tree came crashing down.

But, let’s celebrate the fact that only one or two ornaments broke, lol!

Too bad Brian didn’t snap a photo. I totally would have! By the time I came home, the lights were hanging everywhere and Brian acted like they were actually OK like that…silly husband!

I started pulling them off the tree.

And we got to decorating..again!

It’s a good thing our family loves Christmas, right??

Here’s the thing: I could have allowed today’s circumstances to destroy my outlook. I could have resorted to being a miserable, no good mom with a messed up tree and pukey kids.

There’s hardly a single day that comes where things go as planned for our family. I’m learning more and more that my job is to adapt and adjust and move forward with what we have!

I set the tone for our family most days.

We can mope and groan and whine about what we don’t have and what’s not perfect and what didn’t go our way.

OR

We can live knowing that today is exactly as God planned and nothing more or less.

That’s what I’m going to do.

On days when trees come crashing down.

On days when kids are puking all over the place.

On days when I want to crawl back in bed and pull the covers over my head.

This verse I read from Proverbs earlier this week says it brilliantly:

Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment. Proverbs 9:6 NLT

Let’s begin to live, friends.

  1. Oh no!! Kayla said she wasn’t feeling when I saw her yesterday, I was praying it was nothing. Hope everyone feels better soon. This is a great reminder that God is in control!

  2. Yes it is a wonderful reminder that God is in control. We can make our plans but it is the Lord who numbers our steps. Love your choice to make it a positive day. I am so thankful for your example in my life. Thank you Starr!

  3. AMEN, Starr. The enemy will try hard to destroy our peace and joy. We have a choice to stand on the truth and trust Jesus.

  4. Before I started reading the entire text I gasped at tree feel and sick kids. After reading the entire text and your positive attitude about it all I felt a peace. You are such an inspiration to me. Thanks and hope everyone feels better soon. Hugs, Patty
