#slowitdownSunday / just SHOW UP

the daily Starr slow it down Sunday

We still go to Sunday School on Sunday mornings. I’m thankful for the opportunity to meet with a small group of people to go through God’s Word and discuss real life scenarios. Yes, most days it’s hard to get up and get our entire family out the door when it would be nice to sleep in. And most days we’re running 5 minutes behind. But, the payoff has truly been worth it.

I remember conversations we’ve had with our Sunday School class when I’m faced with daily decisions and when I’m thinking about how I will react. AND our kids are learning about the Bible at the same time. SOOO worth it.

Currently, we’re studying the book of James – a life lessons small group study by Max Lucado.

This study guides us through the entire book of James over 12 weeks and has excellent discussion questions to go with the text.

I also love that scattered throughout the book are excerpts from various books written by Max Lucado.

Today we read from James 2:14-26. The essence of these scriptures is James teaching that faith without works is dead.

Yes, you can talk all day long about faith and when you got saved and baptized, etc. BUT, if you aren’t living a life that reflects your salvation in your actions, your faith is DEAD.

He’s blunt and to the point.

And I LOVE IT!

As we discussed what it means to live a life with faith and works, some might think the works part has to do with giving and money and stuff.

Yes, giving is part of that. But, there’s a whole other aspect that has nothing to do with money.

JUST SHOW UP.

Max says it this way:

Show up. Nothing takes the place of your presence. Letters are nice. Phone calls are special, but being there in the flesh sends a message…Do you believe in your kids? Then show up. Show up at their games. Show up at their plays. Show up at their recitals. It may not be possible to make each one, but it’s sure worth the effort. An elder in our church supports me with his presence. Whenever I speak at an area congregation, he’ll show up. Does nothing. Says little. Just takes a seat in a pew and smiles when we make eye contact. It means a lot to me. In fact, as I write the final draft of this book, he is one room away. Made the ninety-minute drive from his house to my hideout just to pray for me. Do you believe in your friends? Then show up. Show up at their graduations and weddings. Spend time with them. You want to bring out the best in someone? Then show up.  (From A Love Worth Giving by Max Lucado)

You don’t have to say a bunch of words. Just show up.

Max went on to talk about listening and speaking as well:

I don’t know where you are in your faith journey, but I know that we each have a part. To be fully alive in Christ and to be used by Him, we must act.

We simply cannot be content to live a life that reflects “my four and no more.”

I challenge you tonight, are you living a life of faith AND works?

What steps can you take to “show up” and practice true Christianity, through your words and other ways this week?

Do that.
