I walked into a friend’s house last week and this is what I saw:
First of all, let’s note that her house is spotless and clutter free. Mine is never like this. I should note also that her house is on the market to be sold, so maybe that has something to do with it, hahah!
Second of all, see those red candles on the table? At first glance, I said, “Hey, I have a set just like those!!”
Then she reminded me that I actually GAVE her those candles as a Christmas give like 7 or 8 years ago!! Wow!
Yes, I buy myself gifts when I buy presents for friends…ooops, guilty!
Next she said something that hit me – “They don’t match the room, but I love them!”
I was taken back that the candles had actually survived this many years – even through her husband who is the KING of get rid of stuff – and that she loved them so much they would stay on her table, even though they didn’t match.
What a sweet friendship, awwwwwweee!
I thought more about those candles and our friendship this week. I’m the same way, I hold onto things in my life that don’t match or go, but for what they represent. Mirrors from my grandmother, artwork a friend made me in college, small gifts from thoughtful friends.
But, then my style changes.
This is where most people are not like me.
They trash those things that don’t match and move on.
I hold onto them thinking they will magically work again, somehow.
My very own red candles have been on top of the china cabinet for well over 2 years. I even have one that is broken and I can’t seem to part ways with them!!! How crazy is that!!!???
Tonight, they got a makeover.
I grabbed my can of white Valspar Exterior Primer and started painting over the red.
It took 3 coats to get good coverage.
I also took spray adhesive to the broken bottom piece and for now, it’s holding. Good enough for me!
Then, I added some of my grandmother’s milk glass vases to the center of the table. These have become my favorites pieces to decorate with year round and now the candles match!
Next, to the yard to gather some branches from our bushes to give a pretty fall look.
You can’t even see the broken one now!
Branches like these will last several weeks with water. And when they die, just go clip a few more! FREE and easy and quick!!
Oh, by the way we’re still celebrating from Brock’s birthday. Kayla’s birthday is just a few weeks away, so why stop celebrating now??
And with candles, you still see light out of the top.
Oh look, someone came to help!
And if you’re wondering, yes – I’m going to paint my friend’s candles too 🙂
Do you have decor items you’ve held onto even though they don’t match your current style? Don’t be afraid to paint and bring them up to date. White is always a good neutral choice to last through many styles and seasons.
