image #makeovermonday / an old college dorm floor lamp turned glitzy glamour

Today’s #makeovermonday project includes a cheap college dorm floor lamp (which is actually NOT from my college years, but instead the first few years of marriage and we were poor and needed lights in our bedrooms that didn’t have overhead lighting – true story). This came from Walmart or Target for $10. It’s like a funeral home lamp. Cool. We had 3 of them. This is the lone survivor.

And just because I was in a painting mood, I threw in this old lamp I found on clearance at Lowe’s many moons ago. I’ve been tempted to sell this one at yard sales over the years, but I just knew it had potential.

First, I removed the shades because I needed to determine what shades would work before painting the color I had in mind.

For the fit I wanted in the smaller lamp, I needed to find an adjustment piece. I stole one off another lamp and it worked perfectly!

I tried about 5 different shades – which included removing shades from all around my house and doing a massive shade switcheroo. Nothing ever stays the same in this house, lol.

Next up, painting. I really intend to use these lamps in my office and I’ve wanted gold, resisting the urge to buy new lamps every time I’m in Target.

Today’s paint of choice is Valspar Metallic Spray Paint in Brilliant Gold.

At first glance, it seemed to be a little more brassy than I had hoped.

But, it did lighten a bit as it dried and I was hopeful. I could always paint them again if I want another shade.

Side note, I got a defective can of paint and it totally sprayed my hand. Not cool. Although, gold nail polish does seem to be in style these days!

Back to the lamps.

I was like a giddy school girl ready to take these beauties inside!!

I started moving things around in the office. Here is what reality looks like on a normal day in the Haigler house.

Hmmm, not terrible. But, oh y’all. I know how to hide crap. Let’s look at the other side of the desk….

Yep.

I started to clean up a bit so I could figure out the lamp situation.

First, I added the floor lamp beside my desk and the chair. You may notice there is an overhead light right beside there, but I despise using that. It’s super harsh and I’m actually waiting on Brian or someone to change it out.

Next, I added the small lamp to a side table at the couch.

I love love love these lamp additions. So much that they inspired me to clean the office.

Who does that house up there belong to?????

Should I mention here that my husband and daughter were sitting beside me while I was loading these photos tonight and Kylie asked, “Whose house is that???”

Brian busted out laughing.

Why yes, that’s indeed OUR house, sweet daughter.

Don’t worry – you know there’s always another view in the same room. Here ya go.

That’s more like what you’ll see everyday around here.

I’ve been using my office daily lately and my favorite thing is to sit with the lamps and turn the bright overheads off.

This is where you’ll find me most days as I come to my little keyboard and write in my little space on the internet.

Thanks for meeting me here, friends!

Have old home decor you love, but want to have a different color or style? Grab a can of spray paint and head outside. For lamps, don’t be afraid to trade out lamp shades – I do this all the time to change the look.

Today’s paint: Valspar Metallic Spray Paint in Brilliant Gold.
