#makeovermonday / kitchen remodel – dated wallpaper to modern classic

the daily Starr makeover monday blog

Last week on Makeover Monday I shared about painting the brick and brass fireplace in one of our rental houses.

[you can read that entire post here]

How fun was that??

This week, I’m giving a glimpse of another room in the same house – we’ll call this one our Country Fixer Upper.

You’ve probably had a kitchen like this before, I know I have. You might even have one now.

There’s nothing wrong with this – if you built a house in the 90s, then this look is exactly what was in style. My parents had apples in our kitchen and it looked almost exactly like this while I was in high school. Yep.

But that was almost 20 years ago….MAN I FEEL OLD!!!!!

This house has good, solid bones. The cabinets are in great shape and the floorplan isn’t bad for this smaller ranch home.

Time to bring it up to more of a classic and modern look to last the next decade or more.

For this quick makeover our kitchen punch list included:

Paint the cabinets
Replace the countertops
Strip down the wallpaper
Add backsplash
Replace the flooring
Change out the appliances

Are you ready?

Let’s all pretend that there are cabinet doors over that microwave, mmmk? I’ll explain later.

Do you need to see the before and after together, because y’all!!!

Amazing!!

A few details for this makeover –

We painted the cabinets using Sherwin Williams Mindful GrayΒ  SW 7016.

Counter tops were replaced, from laminate to granite. The color is Luna Pearl.

The back splash is a simple white ceramic subway tile.

Something unexpected that came up on this makeover was the light switches, outlets and covers. I didn’t realize they were all ivory. Once they installed the white subway tile, it was SUPER obvious of the ivory switches and outlets.

We changed those out to make it blend more with the white tile. We actually switched out the entire house to white and it gave it such a clean and fresh look. Any electrician can take care of doing this for you – I happen to know some really good ones in our family πŸ™‚

I didn’t pay attention to the curve in the wood over the sink. If I had noticed before, I may have gotten Brian’s mom to straighten that out to make it look a little more up to date.

Now – the microwave.

If you’ll remember – the original kitchen did not have a microwave installed over the stove – there’s only a hood.

Most people want a microwave installed in their kitchens now, so we had Brian’s mom come in and cut those cabinets down in order to install a microwave above. She had to make new cabinet doors to fit the new size. We were under such a tight deadline on this project, the cabinet doors didn’t make the move in date and this was the very last chance I had to get photos before they came the next morning.

As my favorite home blogger says, “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful!”The Nester

And you can always just snap a pretty photo without the missing cabinets, haha!

The appliances were a great deal from Lowe’s. It was around Labor Day and they had a fantastic sale going. We were able to get all 3 of these stainless appliances – stove, microwave and dishwasher – for under $1,000. They run sales all the time. If you’re in need of new appliances, just wait for a sale. Lowe’s also has free delivery when you purchase over a certain amount.

Remember the breakfast area?

What a change.

The other door wasn’t fully attached on the laundry area, thus I couldn’t hid the paint cans. But, you get the point!

Next Monday, I’ll share what we did with the master bath – oh yes.

Kitchen makeovers don’t have to break the bank. Consider painting cabinets and doing one small project at a time. Countertops are usually the biggest investment if you’re going with granite. Although, they make great options that are more cost effective if you’re on a budget. I don’t even have granite in my kitchen, y’all! Take one small project at a time.
