Last week on #trashouttuesday I tackled the dreaded shoe cubby I haven’t cleaned out in 10 years.
It has been so refreshing to have a sorted space and a place to put every single shoe. Imagine if my whole life felt like this??? Genius. Right??
We’ve come a long way in our organizing efforts over the past few months and our downstairs is absolutely fantastic. Everything has a place and I know where to find things.
Upstairs is not nearly like that.
I spend hours looking for things I know I just had 10 minutes ago, my clothes are in giant piles in the middle of my bedroom at the moment and our closet needs major work.
For today’s project I fought the urge to feel overwhelmed and give up and eat chips and dip while binge watching Netflix. Instead I decided to simply do the next thing and continue in the closet to the next set of shelves and drawers beside the shoe cubby.
The ugly reality?
That pile in the floor gets moved more than I care to admit. Anytime I want to use my war room, I have to move it. Anytime I want to access those drawers, I have to move it.
And those shelves are terribly wasted. Wasted space.
Odds and ends are thrown up there instead of holding things I actually need to access.
If I’m being completely honest, my entire closet is pretty much like that. Wasted space.
First, I emptied out the shelves. That top shelf was full of clothes I can’t fit into (I allow myself one shelf of these) and other random clothes had gotten mixed in, so a big mess.
I reorganized and then had room to fit my sweaters in front.
Next, I sat for a long time and just stared at the shelves. Like a dork. Sitting dork.
What would make me happiest in this space?
Folded clothes that I actually wear don’t work well here. I have a hard time getting to them and they always end up a mess.
I ended up putting a suitcase on the second shelf.
My problem when we come home from a trip is that I never unpack immediately. And I don’t plan on changing this habit. Having a place I can store my stuffed suitcase and still access the items inside is a win-win. Brian is rolling his eyes here.
My closet, my rules 🙂
I have the same problem with my bathroom bag after we go on a trip. It sits like this in the bathroom beside the counter.
Please tell me I’m not alone here, people.
So that bag goes on the next shelf in my closet!
And for now, the bottom shelf will remain open until I figure out what should go there.
I’m pretty happy with my progress tonight!
Bonus: I can actually walk right into my war room!!
My wall is growing and I truly love this little space in the middle of my chaos.
How about you? Do you have wasted space in your home?
- Pick one space in your house to tackle – make it simple.
- Clean everything out and find a home for it or get rid of it.
- Only put back items that make you happy and make sense for what you need where.
- Don’t keep things in the place they’ve always been. Moving things to be more efficient is super motivating!
