Last weekend we decided to take a last minute road trip for my sister’s 16th birthday.
Our family is known for pulling out of the driveway and not knowing exactly where we’re going or where we’re going to stay!! Yes, crazy!
We decided to head towards the Charleston area – since Joy and her best friend had never ventured to that area and I’ve only been once when I was in college.
A friend recently shared with me about a new app for finding cheap hotel rooms at the last minute. It’s called Hotel Tonight:
This is how it works – whenever hotels have leftover rooms they aren’t going to book, they add them to the Hotel Tonight system and the later you wait, the lower the price goes!
Our first experience using Hotel Tonight went a little like this.
We decided to go towards the Isle of Palms beach area right outside of Charleston. After doing a bit of research, I found that Wild Dunes Resort is highly popular in this area. I called to book a room directly with the hotel and they wanted $280 for 1 King room. That was WAY out of our budget.
As we started driving towards Isle of Palms, I pulled up the Hotel Tonight app to see exactly what they had to offer. Low and behold – that same King room at Wild Dunes Resort that was $280 when I called was only $130 in the app!!! I am not kidding. I booked directly on the app and we stayed for a WHOLE lot cheaper than most of those other people enjoying the beach last Monday – woooohoooo! I love getting me a bargain!
I forgot to take a screen shot, but here is what it looks like. I did a search for tomorrow night (it doesn’t exactly have to be for TONIGHT) and that same hotel is already down to $162 for tomorrow night. It will go lower the later it gets and the longer the rooms stay available.
You can even set an alert to notify you if the rates change.
Note: not all hotels are in this app, so if you’re picky and looking to stay at a particular hotel it may not be there. We happened to hit the jackpot for the exact hotel we were looking for.
A few other resources I use when booking our travel and hotels for cheap:
I also usually check directly with a hotel because rarely you can find they offer a cheaper rate than anywhere advertised online, especially if it is the last minute and they want to get rid of an empty room.
We love to take spontaneous adventures, but I refuse to break the bank on hotels and travel expenses when it’s completely unnecessary. Hope this helps!
