2 summers ago we cleaned out my grandmother’s house and for the very first time, we inherited antique furniture that has been passed down for generations in our family.
This antique side by side secretary desk was originally owned by Lillie and Curley Kelly, my great-grandparents.
Ain’t they pretty? Yep. He was named Curley – with no hair, ha!
My grandparents refinished this beautiful piece and it sat in their home for many years.
Now, it’s finally part of our home.
Honestly, I’ve been fighting the urge to paint this piece. But everyone in my family says NOOOOO. So, I’m not painting it.
After filling the desk with items that match our family style, I’m totally in LOVE with this piece we’ve incorporated into our living room.
We took the time to be purposeful when utilizing this space. Over the past few days, we’ve been gathering every candle from around the house. They are now all here in this desk!
We also stored some of our dishes that I have always kept on our counter. Time to clean the counters off – WATCH OUT!!
These candle holders were a wedding gift and I’m tired of them being dark.
Today I spray painted them white.
Carrying the black and white theme in my decor really helped to pull this look together and make it more our own. Those checkerboard boxes were clearance items for less than $5 each a few years ago at Hobby Lobby.
These items were previously used all over our house, I just brought them all together for a great simple look.
The only problem I had was that huge blank space on the wall above the desk.
I didn’t have any kind of painting or artwork to fill the gap, so I decided to use an old canvas I’ve been wanting to redo.
We used this at one point when staging homes. It doesn’t match our look now, but I have another use for it!
I’ve got lots of cheap staples prints rolled up to be used! These big ones are $7 each.
I put the canvas on top of the photo and drew around it with a pencil. Then I cut it down to size and sprayed it with 3M adhesive spray.
Brian helped me lay it straight onto the canvas – andddddd
It’s missing a child – but that’s ok! I can get another print done soon and replace this one to move somewhere else in our house.
For now, this is perfect!
I’m so excited to finally start incorporating family pieces into our home – all while keeping our style!
This goes to show you don’t have to always paint a piece to change the look. Figure out decor items that can be used to match something to your own personal style. Shop your house for theme colors – like black and white, blue and green, etc.
That’s a wrap for this week’s #makeovermonday!
