#slowitdownSunday / we drove our kids crazy on the way home tonight

As we drove home tonight, Brian and I listened to affirmations that are part of our homework for a business class we’re taking.

Just imagine one second being in our car and hearing this…

“I am a happy person.”

“I am confident.”

“I have positive thoughts.”

“I am a listener.”

“I get things done.”

“People love me.”

[Insert eye rolls and major whining from two daughters.]

I laughed and kept speaking the positive affirmations, even ordering them to join in. THAT went over well!!

They did not sound very happy, but hey. We’re a work in progress, y’all!

The more I thought about what our daughters were hearing, the more I realized this is EXACTLY what I want them thinking in their heads.

What exactly do they hear listening to Taylor Swift?????

“I knew you were trouble when you walked in!!”
“Cause, baby, now we got bad blood.”

I don’t want them learning destructive self talk at such a young age.

I don’t want them constantly dwelling on discouragement and becoming depressed.

No, Taylor Swift songs aren’t being banned in our house – BUT – I’m realizing more and more that I can be an intentional mom that sets healthy boundaries and encourages what I want for my children now.

I want them to be confident in who they are and how God made them!

I want them to be HAPPY, full of joy and to spread sunshine wherever they go!

Does this mean life will always be easy and all Polyanna-like??

Nope.

Truth is this: We can speak death or life – the choice is constantly ours, friends.

Proverbs 18:21
The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

Toby Mac has a song that encourages us to speak life.

These lyrics are soooo good. I’ve posted them below.

Let these words sink in tonight and let’s all #slowitdownSunday and choose to speak life this week! In the meantime, I’ll just be driving my kiddos crazy with affirmations in the car alllll weeek longggg!! 🙂

Some days, life feels perfect.
Other days it just ain’t workin.
The good, the bad, the right, the wrong
And everything in between.

Though it’s crazy, amazing
We can turn a heart with the words we say.
Mountains crumble with every syllable.
Hope can live or die

So speak Life, speak Life.
To the deadest darkest night.
Speak life, speak Life.
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why.
Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted;
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope,
You speak love, you speak…
You speak Life, (oh oh oh oh oh oh) You speak Life. (oh oh oh oh oh oh)

Some days the tongue gets twisted;
Other days my thoughts just fall apart.
I do, I don’t, I will, I won’t,
It’s like I’m drowning in the deep.

Well it’s crazy to imagine,
Words from our lips as the arms of compassion,
Mountains crumble with every syllable.
Hope can live or die.

So speak Life, speak Life.
To the deadest darkest night.
Speak life, speak Life.
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why.
Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted;
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope,
You speak love, you speak…
You speak Life, (oh oh oh oh oh oh) You speak Life. (oh oh oh oh oh oh)

Lift your head a little higher,
Spread the love like fire,
Hope will fall like rain,
When you speak life with the words you say.

Raise your thoughts a little higher,
Use your words to inspire,
Joy will fall like rain,
When you speak life with the things you say.

Lift your head a little higher,
Spread the love like fire,
Hope will fall like rain,
When you speak life with the words you say.

So speak Life, speak Life.
To the deadest darkest night.
Speak life, speak Life.
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why.
Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted;
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope,
You speak love, you speak…
You speak Life, (oh oh oh oh oh oh) You speak Life. (oh oh oh oh oh oh)

You speak Life, (oh oh oh oh oh oh) You speak Life. (oh oh oh oh oh oh)

Some days life feels perfect.

  1. I have written down these affirmations and placed in a prominent place. I so agree with being intentional with my Son and content he is exposed to. I know I can’t control it all but I CAN speak Life! Thanks for sharing as always! G

  2. Thanks Starr for those great words of wisdom. My husband and I were just discussing my words. He just said almost the same thing you did but it made me mad when he said it. I guess God knew I needed to here it one more time in 5 minutes or less so I would listen. I need to remember even when things look bad I don’t need to be say so. Remember speak life not death.
