#thirstythursday / someone else should pray

“The reason many of us stop praying and become hard toward God is that we only have an emotional interest in prayer. It sounds good to say that we pray, and we read books on prayer which tell us that prayer is beneficial- that our minds are quieted and our souls are uplifted when we pray. But Isaiah implied in this verse that God is amazed at such thoughts about prayer.”

Oswald Chambers – My Utmost for His Highest

The verse in Isaiah that Oswald Chambers is referencing is this:

He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So he himself stepped in to save them with his strong arm, and his justice sustained him.  Isaiah 59:16 (NLT)

What exactly does this verse mean?

Well, I’m no Biblical scholar, but I believe the one that was amazed is God. Isaiah is prophesying about God sending Jesus as the ultimate intercessor for us.

Isaiah knew the same struggles we have today. We long to do what we know we should do, but fall short. All of us. All of the time.

Yes, we know prayer works.
We read about prayer.
We speak about prayer.
We know the results of prayer.

But when it comes down to setting aside time to ACTUALLY pray?!?

It’s hard, isn’t it?

Yep, for me too.

Later in the devotional, Oswald goes on to say this:

“Do you find yourself thinking that there is no one interceding properly? Then be that person yourself. Be a person who worships God and lives in a holy relationship with Him.”

Let’s all be that person!

Let’s not fall into the trap that prayer is something everyone else should do.

God, on this #thirstythursday I want to be that person who worships, prays and lives in a relationship with You!

    1. Right there with you on this. I don’t know if we’ll ever always get it right. That’s why we need Jesus and His grace. I’m praying today. And I’m praying for you, friend! Love you!
