Today is International Women’s Day.
We had a local nonprofit representative speak at our office today. Their organization is called Turning Point :
Turning Point’s vision is that all people will have safe and healthy relationships, free from domestic abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
Turning Point exists to end domestic abuse, sexual assault, and child abuse through safe shelter, advocacy, prevention, and social change.
And THIS is what sent me into pure shock:
Sorry for the wrinkled paper – I put it in my purse today!
1 in 4 girls.
I have 2 girls.
In more than 90% of these cases, the abuser is someone the child knows and trusts.
That sent chills down my spine.
And then I opened up Facebook on my lunch break to read about a friend that shared her story today of being raped after she had too much to drink at a party in college. She never told anyone. She never went to the police. She became a victim.
This is real.
I don’t want to sit back and ignore what’s happening in our culture.
I’m a woman that can help. I’m a mom that can stand up against violence and abuse.
Today is a day of action, not just words.
As part of their presentation in our meeting, Turning Point shared a wish list for their shelter and families:
So tonight I went around the house and collected several items from the wish list to send over to our local Turning Point Shelter in Union County. This is just a start, we have way more that can be better used by these families than sitting in our closets unused.
If you’re local and want to help out: our office will be taking up a collection as part of our annual service project within the next few months. I would be happy to pick up any donations you have – comment or send me a message.
If you’re not local: I encourage you to seek out a nonprofit in your area that services families in need in the fight against violence and abuse. No community is immune to this problem.
Let’s all work together to help in whatever way we can.
