#makeovermonday / I just made a 1 year supply of laundry detergent for $30

I FINALLY DID IT!!!

I’ve wanted to make my own laundry detergent for so long now. A friend at church taught all of us how she makes a year supply of amazing laundry detergent for around $30!

But, I had a TON of laundry detergent already in our cabinet I found using coupons that we needed to use first.

We’ve been on our last bit of detergent lately and I bought all of my ingredients about a month ago.

Tonight, I made it and I’m sooo excited to share this with you.

It’s a #makeovermonday for your laundry AND your wallet!!

Homemade Laundry Detergent for A Year ($30):

You only need these 5 ingredients:

Cheap Laundry Detergent (I bought a huge bag of Roma)
1 Box of Borax
1 Box of Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster
1 Bottle of Scented Crystals (Optional, if you like smelly laundry – use any scent you like)
1 Container of Clorox OXI MAX*

*Note: this ingredient is important. I found out in reading blogs that most people making their own detergents say this ingredient is a MUST for stains and such. You can’t just get any OXI cleaner. They are not all created equal. You must find an OXI cleaner that has these 2 ingredients ONLY:  sodium carbonate and sodium percarbonate. If it has any added ingredients, it won’t work as well.

I found all of the above ingredients at Wal-mart, except for the Clorox OXI MAX – that came from Target.

I found a large clear tub with a lid to make and store my detergent in.

I did one layer at a time of all ingredients. I would mix it up well between each layer.

I used all of the ingredients shown, except for about half of the crystals. My friend didn’t use this large of a bottle, so I used about half of the bottle shown above.

I’m keeping the large tub up on a shelf in the laundry room.

I used the empty Clorox container to keep a small amount above my washing machine.

My friend recommends using about 2 tablespoons of detergent with each load. She just sprinkles it all in the bottom of the tub.

Here are her exact instructions she shared with our ladies group:

An added unexpected benefit: your laundry room is going to smell AMAZING after making this!!

My friend shared that this laundry detergent is her final recipe after trying many variations over the years. It gets clothes cleaner than anything she’s ever purchased before. And it saves a ton of money and time!

Have you ever made your own laundry detergent? I’m happy happy happy! I’m gonna go do laundry now, ha!

  1. Any idea whether this would work in an HE washer? As the one who does the laundry in our house, this would be great, because I seem to ALWAYS be buying detergent…I mean, how many clothes can two people dirty up? 😊

    1. Yes! My friend that gave me the recipe has been using this in her HE washer for a few years. It works fine in mine too. I just put the powder in the bottom of the bowl before I load my clothes 🙂 I know exactly what you mean! I’m drowning here with 5 of us!! Hahah

    2. I just checked each container and all of them specifically say safe for HE except for the Roma. It doesn’t say it isn’t safe, just doesn’t list anything. I looked online and from what I found it is safe. You could always trade that out for any cheap laundry powder you like – and one that is specifically marked for HE if you are worried. It is working great for us 🙂
