#makeovermonday / make over your marriage with 12 days of Christmas

Today’s #makeovermonday post is all about making over your marriage this Christmas season.

Several weeks ago, I wanted to find a fun way to count down to our anniversary and I remembered a post on Pinterest about the 12 days of Christmas for your husband!

I decided to put my own special twist on the countdown for my man.

First, I found these awesome tools at Target on the end of an aisle marked down for CLARRANCE!!

A box for each day’s surprise ($3):

A pre-made banner set with string ($2)

And coordinating blank tags with strings ($1.50)

The only item I purchased not on sale would be these birch branches that light up like a Christmas tree. I paid $24 and did not mind that because I plan to use these in our bedroom all year long. I put them inside a vase I already had.

They make such a wonderful night light in your bedroom! I love love love these branches! They are bendable too. So you can arrange them however you like. There are actually 3 separate branches in the set and I have them all in the one vase.

For my countdown, I numbered all of the tags on the front with a heart and number 1-12:

Then, I hung all of the tags on the wall with the back side blank (they aren’t all here because I forgot to take a photo at the beginning ha).

Each night, I would take down the tag for the day and write a note on the back and put it inside the box with the surprise.

After Brian opened the box with the tag, he would hang it up on the tree.

You could use this idea for Christmas, an anniversary, a birthday, Valentine’s day, really for ANY occasion – or just because you feel like being nice 🙂

I’ve even thought about using this countdown idea with our kids leading up to their birthdays or for a special trip that we might plan in the future – anything to get them excited and happy about something coming up in our family.

Don’t think that the items in the box need to be things you buy – get creative. Here are a few ideas below. Make it your own and do whatever is right for YOU!

Hershey kisses
a massage from you
date night
their favorite snack
their favorite softdrink
Dove chocolate (2 turtle doves)
their favorite dinner at home
their favorite dessert
handwritten love notes (you could do this one everyday – wouldn’t that be awesome – 12 days of love notes!)
1 hour to do whatever they choose (maybe a nap HA!)
popcorn and a movie
a clean bedroom with fresh linens on the bed
a night alone at home while the kids are away
watching his favorite sport with him
an early bedtime for the kids so you have time alone
a do not disturb sign for your bedroom door
his favorite book
a coupon for you to go with him on his favorite hobby – hunting, golf, etc.

And anything else you can think of that your man would like!

If you want to do the 12 days of Christmas and finish on Christmas Day – you’ll need to start your countdown next Monday, Dec 14. That gives you one whole week to plan!!

Obviously, I’m not the first one to think of this idea – there are TONS of pins/blogs on Pinterest that have ideas and even printables to make your own tags at home from your computer.

I’ve created a board on Pinterest with lots of these ideas if you need some creative help.

No matter the logistics and how you do this – it’s all about creating something special and something to look forward to. Something to keep the spice in your marriage. And that is always a good thing, indeed!!
