31 Days of Giveaways / #shareitsaturday how we use essential oils

Our family started using essential oils about 3 years ago.

Public Service Announcement: This is NOT a post about how I want you to purchase oils from me and a marketing ploy!!!

Glad we got that out of the way. I don’t want anyone to ever feel that I’m using this blog to sell you something. Yes, one day I want to have an online shop with fun stuff (think something like Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market), but this space is about writing – not selling.

One might say I’ve been more like the undercover oil user, hah! I don’t have time to sell oils as a business, but we use them often and I’ve shared with several of my friends when they ask about what we do.

I started using oils after seeing a friend from college post on Facebook about how she started using something called “Peace and Calming” oil blend in her toddler’s room at night to help him sleep.

That had my attention. For sure.

For today’s #shareitsaturday, here’s how we use essential oils in our family!

During the first year I simply used a variety of oils in a diffuser in my girls room each night.

A diffuser is like a humidifier – you put water in each night, then drop in whatever oils you choose. The mist diffuses the oils into the air.

Then, we started slowly using oils a little more like Thieves (one of my favorites) more often in the diffuser when we felt sickness coming on.

Thieves is a blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary.

That’s what I diffuse most often on my nightstand. It just makes our room smell so yummy.

Lately, we’ve been using this trio of 3 oils when my girls have a tough time with allergies: Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint – all mixed together.

I diffuse this in their room while they sleep at night, but when they are having a really tough time with allergy season I also rub this mix on their wrists, the bottoms of the back of their necks and the bottoms of their feet.

They love it!

Sometimes if I’m using a hot oil (an oil that might burn the skin if directly applied without being diluted), I’ll mix it with coconut oil or even Vaseline before putting directly on their skin.

We truly love our oils around here and I’m a Young Living fan. That’s the only kind I’ve ever used, so I’m not sure about the other brands.

Today’s giveaway includes one bottle of Young Living RC oil – compliments of Caroline over at The College Cosmopolitan blog.

RC stands for Respiratory Comfort. It’s another oil that’s great for allergies and winter wellness as it gets colder outside. RC has two kinds of eucalyptus oil, peppermint, lavender and a few other oils. You can read more about RC here.

  1. Dear Starr, I can’t believe I am as old as dirt and have never heard of or used oils. However, just recently I am hearing more and more. I have been looking for something to help my daughter who gets terrible migraines and has fibromyalgia. I am not sure which ones to get to get started. If you would have the time to advise that would be greatly appreciated.

  2. A few ladies in my church had shared with me about oils and how faithfully they use them. Ive been wanting to try them for myself first without investing in something I don’t really know about! So I would love to win this and try it out!

    1. You need to talk to Kath and Celia at church 🙂 it took us a long time to convince Kath to get on board! Now all of us girls are oily hah!

  3. I used a calming oil the day before and the day of my wedding. My sister in law uses then regularly and I had tried this oil months before “just to see if it worked”. I requested she bring it for the wedding preparations because I wanted to be calm. My brother’s children suffer from severe allergies and I would love to try these oils in their rooms. The diffusers would make a perfect early Christmas gift as well. Thank you for the reminder and the helpful information. And if you start selling oils please let me know.

    1. Yes, Melody the oils have helped my girls with their allergies and we have been super happy. Reach out to Caroline or myself if you want to learn more. I don’t plan to start selling, but I would recommend to order with someone that can provide great support and resources for you – like Caroline! 🙂

  4. Starr, the jury has been out a while on using oils. I don’t know a lot and I really appreciate the ideas and uses you shared. Several adults at Grants school use them. I have had terrible allergies all my life( a Dr told me one time after testing, “the only 2 things you are not allergic to are mold and cockroaches.” with a straight face). I also have Asthma adult onset. So…not only am I now going to try the allergy remedies but probably look into this seriously. the Calming effect is intriguing too. Thanks so much for sharing! I am thrilled to try now.

    1. Yay, Gina!! That’s awesome. My girls suffer from allergies and asthma as well and I didn’t care for some of the side effects their medications were giving. The oils have been a great solution for our family. Let me know how I can help!!

  5. I have friends that use and believe in essential oils. I know they work. I am interested in pursuing knowledge about them and using them for myself and then sharing the information with others.

  6. I started using essential oils almost 2 months ago as a holistic, natural and chemical free way of coping with fatigue and achiness brought on by Lyme Disease. In the past 2 months I have not once taken ibuprofen for pains and the oils have both helped me sleep better and remain energized throughout the day. I love the impact essential oils have had on my ability to cope with these chronic inconveniences!

  7. Hi friends! I’ve been super sick today – but I plan to announce the giveaway winner for the oils on Monday 🙂 I’ll include the winner in the comments here as well. Stay tuned and thank you for your patience!
