31 Days of Giveaways / #makeovermonday family chalk wall reveal

Today’s #makeovermonday is part 2 of our family chalk wall – the reveal!

Last week, I started painting the wall at the bottom of our stairs that faces our living room and leads into the kitchen.

AFTER – only one coat of black chalk paint:

Then, I got tired and went to bed 🙂

This Krylon chalk paint in Flat Black is what was used for the wall. Note: We bought this several years ago, not sure where exactly. I finished the very top of the wall with a Valspar brand of black chalk paint and it was WAYY less runny than the Krylon. I would recommend Valspar if you are going to buy any. It covered much better in my opinion. We got the Valspar can at Lowe’s.

Then, I thought it would be fun to incorporate a few 3 dimensional pieces onto the wall as well.

To start with, I painted these little wooden shelves purchased at Hobby Lobby in the clearance section this past summer for only $3.30!

I used my Valspar Exterior Primer in plain white to paint the outside first.

It took about 2 coats of the white paint. Then, after it dried I covered the inside portion with the same black chalk paint used on the wall. I didn’t sand anything, just painted directly onto the piece.

Then, there is this adorable little metal family tree frame that my mom gave me earlier this year.

I love the concept of the 3D tree for our wall – but the black metal would not show up against the black wall. So, of course I painted it white too. It only took one coat to give it more of the rustic distressed look.

They both turned out beautifully – especially paired together and just POP on that black wall!

Next, I added a little white shelf from IKEA, along with an oversized black and white print from Staples. (This print was only $1.99 ->> you can see how to make those here<<).

And then it was time to let the girls start adding artwork to the family chalk wall!

  1. I would put pictures up we barely have any out cause I have two tornados that destroy everything in their paths lol

  2. I love your wall!!!!! And who would have ever imagined how cute those shelves would have turned out painted!!! I love what all you do!! I already won a chalkboard so don’t enter me-just wanted to tell you I love it!!!

  3. What a great idea! I love this. I’ve considered doing the lower half of one wall in my daughters room so she has a place to draw. But I love the idea of a whole wall like this. Looks great!

  4. You are so creative! The wall looks wonderful! I do believe I would hang it in my kitchen and write …in everything give thanks!!

  5. The wall turned out great. I have a similar size wall in my kitchen that would be perfect for the shelf. I would use the chalk board part for encouraging words and the shelf would hold a pic of the kids!!! The wall holds nothing right now but I’ve wanted something. Now I have ideas.
