31 Days of Giveaways / #slowitdownSunday the one thing you absolutely need

You know those commercials????

The ones that come on between every kids show on the face of the planet – showcasing the latest and greatest toys on the market. And they get even more frequent during the fall – because Christmas is on the way!!

What happens in your family?

In ours – these words are surely coming: “MOM – can we get one of THOSE!??!?!”

This is why we don’t watch regular TV at home, HA! I’m so thankful that Netflix has no commercials. But, when we’re on vacation, they see these commercials and it drives us crazy!

Want. Want. Want.

Need. Need. Need.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

Like our kids really need any more toys??

Then, it hits me.

Like I need another pair of shoes??
Like I need another pair of jeans??
Like I need another picture frame in our house????

I’m no different. I’m a sucker for HGTV and I want to take on every project I see. Oh, and look at that new bathroom remodel. Man, I’d love that in our house.

Want. Want. Want.

Need. Need. Need.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

I’m learning more each day that THINGS are just things. I’m realizing that materialist goals I’ve had around things in my life – a specific car, a large computer screen, a dream vacation – they all satisfy for only a moment.

I’ve been guilty of thinking,

“If I just had that big computer screen, my work would be easier.”
“If only we had that car, our family would be happier.”
“If we could just have a bigger bathroom, I’d love our house more.”
“If I just had a closet full of organizing bins and built in shelves, it would stay clean and picked up.”

(Brian Haigler just choked when he read that last line, btw.)

Things.

They don’t satisfy long term. And sometimes we don’t see that until after we get what we want.

Then, I read this in my Jesus Calling daily devotion for today:

Did you really get that last line?

“The one thing you absolutely need is the one thing you can never lose: My Presence with you.”

Yes, Lord. This is the ONE thing I need.

All else will never satisfy in this life.

Lord, help me to remember this in my life. Help me to not be consumed by things of this world. Help me to focus on Your Word to put things into perspective in my life.

  1. It’s so perfect every day for the last 3 years. I use it over and over and it’s always right on for my day. Now my husband is hooked. Would love it for his 89 year old mother that is pretty much home bound due to physical conditions.

  2. I’ve looked at that devotional book so many times but just never have purchased it. I’d love to have a copy. I especially love your quote today. That is one of the prayers I pray every day for my kids!!!
