#makeovermonday / how to create gorgeous potted plants for summer

I’m a bit challenged when it comes to gardening. Although, I have managed to keep several house plants alive for almost 2 years – even though they tend to droop a lot until I remember that they need that thing called…water.

Plants are easier than flowers, in my opinion.

I LOVE flowers. I even read a quote today that sums up my love:

“I must have flowers, always and always.” – Claude Monet

There’s nothing more joyful and relaxing than walking up to a doorstep filled with luscious flowers in bloom. My mom is GREAT at this! Here’s proof, straight from her front porch:

And, look at this little cutie that jumped into a photo with the flowers because she just couldn’t help it:

Now. In direct contrast to the beauty you just witnessed above, here are the flowers from MY front porch:

LOOK! There’s still hope. I see green on that one plant.

Obviously, I’m not the expert in flowers and gardening.

I would like to defend myself a bit, though. The front of our house gets the blazing hot direct afternoon sun. My mom’s house is directly across the street from me and gets the glorious morning sunlight. This is why she has flowers and ferns and all things beautiful. And I don’t.

And she remembers to water her flowers…small details.

For today’s #makeovermonday I’m sharing how I witnessed a group of gardening and landscaping experts – yes, experts – put together gorgeous potted plants that you too can give a try for making your porch a little happier this summer (unless you get the afternoon sun like I do…if so, don’t try this at home. Get help!).

First, they filled these gigantic potters with Miracle Grow soil.

Then, they added WAY more flowers than I would have ever tried.

1 big tall pink flower.
3 big purple flowers.
2 big yellow flowers.

Don’t you like my technical flower terms?

And they mushed them all together into that pot. They didn’t even bother breaking apart the roots. This puzzled me. My grandma said you always needed to do that. But, they told me that as long as you are dealing with fresh flowers that aren’t root bound, just drop them straight into the pot.

Isn’t that just GORGEOUS??

They told me that they water a little every day, unless they get rain.

Instant beautification.

And 3 months later…here is what it looks like:

Still growing and much fuller.

I also found this cute little hanging basket with so many varieties:

My poor hanging basket didn’t make it.

I even sat it in the yard in hopes that rain might help. But, we got no rain.

Have you had success with potted plants on your porch? What are your secrets? Up for trying it out? I might give it another go!!! I hope you are inspired, too. Oh, and I’ve been seeing lots of plants on sale at Walmart and Lowe’s for end of season, so you might find you some deals!!

Happy Monday, friends ~
