#slowitdownSunday / a family challenge: everything without grumbling or arguing

It’s time to #slowitdownSunday and reflect a bit on what we’ve learned this week and prepare for an exciting week ahead!

What did you learn in church this weekend?

Our Sunday School teacher read this excerpt from a small devotional book called You Are Blessed – Inspiration to Recharge Your Soul by Darlene Sala.

After hearing this verse, I couldn’t help but think of a challenge that Brian and I have done a few times before as part of a training class.

For the entire 9 weeks that we attended this class, we were challenged to stop complaining, blaming or justifying our victim mindsets. They gave each of us a stretchy purple bracelet to wear. Each time that you complained, blamed or justified – you had to switch the bracelet from one arm to the other.

The goal of the challenge: to see if you could go an entire day without complaining and switching the bracelet.

Y’all would not even believe how HARD this is to do!

Instantly, you realize how very much you complain. And if you want to have some serious accountability – do this challenge with a spouse or best friend that you’re with all the time. The most common phrase between Brian and I during those 9 weeks: “Switch your bracelet!!”

Even after doing the no complaining challenge for 9 weeks straight, it’s super easy to revert back to grumbling and arguing.

I’m joining my Sunday School teacher this week and trying this challenge with our entire family. I went around the house tonight and gathered enough stretchy bracelets for each of us to wear.

We explained the verse from Philippians 2:14 and explained the rules for the week. Every time that we complain, grumble or argue – we will have to switch our bracelets.

We are gonna need some serious prayers around here this week, ha!

Want to join us? You can find stretchy bracelets at the dollar store, Wal-mart or Party City – usually in a multi-pack in the party section. Start a challenge with your family, friends or co-workers to put action to Philippians 2:14 and stop the grumbling and arguing together!

Proverb of the Day:
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up. [Proverbs 12:25 NIV]

  1. Ok, I’ll find one to put on for the week. You should have told me before lunch today, before I called the driver in front of me an idiot because he was talking and left me siting through another red light while he got through it! πŸ™‚

    1. Mom- that’s HILARIOUS! Well, good for you that the challenge just started tonight! I have enough bracelets for you and Joy if you want to join – send her over to get them πŸ™‚

  2. Love it!!!!! We will be starting this challenge as a whole family as well this week. After, discussing we thought our family would benefit too! I can’t wait to hear everyone’s results 😊
