We started this tradition a few months ago in our weekly choir rehearsal. Pick a word, any word. Think on that word and pray on that word. Tell others around you – it might encourage them to find their own 1 word. I sometimes let my 1 word linger into the week well past Wednesday.
Today’s word for me is EXCESS.
I’m struggling to let go of stuff. Last night I went through my closet and pulled out over half of what I own to donate. Still, there’s too much.
It’s a terrible feeling to sit in the middle of your closet floor and realize that your stuff has been holding onto you. It’s a terrible feeling to realize that your stuff has possibly been taking the place of your very being that should have been filled with God.
How dumb is that? How did I let my excess get so out of control?
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15)
It is time to change. Today is a new start. Less excess. A lot less excess.
How about you? What’s your 1 word for today?
